WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?
The gilded head of Hathor is in the shape of a cows head with black horns and a gold face.
WHAT WAS IT MADE OUT OF?
The statue is made of wood with a thing layer of gesso. The face and a portion neck are covered in gold, whereas the lower part of the neck is covered in a dark resin.The horns are covered in dark resin also, but are also covered with a thin sheet of copper or bronze. The different parts of the eyes are made up of inlays of glass and stone.
WHAT WAS IT USED FOR?
Hathor would assist the deceased. They come to her when they enter the afterlife, it is she who anoints them and gives them life after death.
WHAT DOES IT REPRESENT?
This golden cow head represent the Goddess of the West, Hathor. The use of gold for the skin of the face represents the immortality of the Gods and Goddesses.
