WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?
The outer shrine was made of wood and had a double sloping roof. It measured 5.08m in length and 2.75m in height. The second shrine was made of wood and had a sloping roof. It measured 3.75m in length and 2.25m in height. The third shrine was made of wood and it measured to 3.4m in length and 2.15m in height. The innermost shrine was made of wood and measured to 2.9m in length and 1.9m in height.
WHAT IS IT MADE OUT OF?
It was mostly built of cedar and was held together by tenons of oak. they were made out of wood which was then covered in faience which was a combination of crushed quartz, lime and alkali. This was used by the Ancient Egyptians to represent a golden appearance.
WHAT WAS IT USED FOR?
The four shrines were used as a protection for the sarcophagus to help stop any disruption for the pharaoh into the afterlife. The Tutankamun shrines were containers that were dedicated to the living Tutankhamun which was then placed in a sacred area which was his tomb.
WHAT DOES IT REPRESENT?
The shrines were very religious and it had a variety of texts to help the pharaoh into the afterlife. This consisted of the book of the dead, book of the divine cow, book of what is in the underworld which had magic spells in them which were used for protection and knowledge. Pharaoh presided over festivals for example the Heb Sed festival. The outer shrine was decorated in amulets of Isis, hieroglyphics of Osiris and had multiple Wadjet eyes which was a sign of protection to ward off evil. Spells from the the Book of the Dead were inscribed and there was no seal. The second shrine had a depiction of Tutankhamun before Osiris( god of underworld) which highlighted the procedure into the afterlife and how he was being welcomed into the underworld. The third shrine's roof had a depiction of the solar disc which was a representation of the sun god Aten. The innermost shrine contained the coffins and mummy of Tutankhamun and the door to the shrine was never sealed.
