WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?
It was found in between the third and fourth shrine. It was over one metre in length.
WHAT WAS IT MADE OUT OF?
The handle and the semi circular palm was made out of gold foil.
WHAT WAS IT USED FOR?
It was used for leisure activities for example at banquets or festivals. The gold represented their wealth and royalty and showed that it was only used for special occasions.
WHAT DOES IT REPRESENT?
The front of the fan was a depiction of Tutankhamun hunting ostriches which could have also been used as the plumes in the fan. This highlights that hunting may of been a social and military activity in the 18th dynasty. On the opposite side there is a depiction of Tutankhamun carrying the feathers of the bird under his arm while his attendants carry the slaughtered birds. The vertical inscription on the length of the handle records the details of the hint which took place in the desert near Heliopolis. It also symbolises the divine presence of the pharaoh and was used to restore the breath of life in the deceased.
